Maintaining electric fences and powerlines

Powerlines

Landowners and farm managers have a legal responsibility to ensure private powerlines are maintained in sound condition and that they are clear of vegetation. Detailed information on these requirements are at Energy Safe Victoria.

Electric fencing

It is a common practice to switch off electric fences at times of extreme fire danger and during Total Fire Bans.

When sparks jump from one wire to another in the presence of dry vegetation, electric fences can cause fire.

Check electric fences to make sure they are free of wire, grass, weeds and other vegetation. Operate according to manufacturer’s advice.

Compensation for damaged fences

If your fences are damaged by firefighting equipment during a bushfire, you can apply for compensation under the DSE - Fencing and Control Line policy
