State Championships - Celebrating CFA

CFA VFBV Championships Banner

The CFA/VFBV Firefighter State Championships are one of CFA's proudest and longest traditions.

'Championship' events are a chance for the community to watch our volunteer firefighters compete in a fun, family-friendly environment, as well as an opportunity to find out more information about CFA.

Planning for the CFA VFBV State Firefighter Championships 2025 are well underway.

History

The State Championships have been held annually for since 1874, when the first State Championship was held in Melbourne. The only cancellations have been due to World War I, World War II and the COVID19 pandemic.

In the 1950s, the Rural State Championships were developed to reflect the unique skills of rural brigades.

The competitions started out as 'Demonstrations' with the introduction of hose reels into the fire service in the mid 1800s. This was to assist in getting hose and other necessary equipment to the scene of a fire faster. Brigades soon found that competing with other brigades improved their firefighting training and efficiency.

The State Championship became the peak of the season's competitions conducted by districts and associations across the state.

Purpose

Our local competitions and State Championships show the endurance and reliability of many of our brigades. Competitions and Championships have demonstrated a means of promoting leadership in our members and have always been an opportunity to promote volunteerism locally.

Today at our local competitions and State Championships, CFA also promotes the benefit of general wellbeing and to focus on fitness, with all competitors celebrated for `having a go'.

As CFA progresses, we see our local competitions and State Championships as an important opportunity to:

  • bring the CFA family together in a spirit of celebration
  • build lasting friendships and relationships between communities across Victoria and
  • share this with our service delivery partners and the broader community.
