In this module, students learn that while fire plays an important role in ecosystem health, it can also be a natural hazard that causes damage and harm to people, places and communities.
Students brainstorm the potential impacts of bushfire hazards and identify the impacts of most concern to them. Students then examine bushfire risk as a function of hazard exposure, vulnerability and capacity and develop skills for assessing levels of bushfire risk in their own community. This learning enables students to understand that the impacts of bushfire hazards are not ‘natural’ or inevitable: rather, they are the consequence of human action and decision-making and there is a lot we can do to prevent them.
